HOW IDENTIFYING PEOPLE WITH DOWN’S SYNDROME CAN CHANGE THEIR LIVES

Raising awareness for the parents, families and carers of people with Down's Syndrome so that the identification can change their lives.

#Eutambémconto0123 is a national awareness campaign launched on World Down’s Syndrome day, 21st of March by the parents and members of the PAIS21Association, Down Portugal with the aim of raising awareness for the parents, families, and carers of people with Down’s Syndrome in order to understand the dimension of this reality and changing their lives.

The need arises from the fact that, in reality, it is not known how many people with there are with Down’s syndrome in Portugal because it has never been counted and has never been put high on the agendas of major institutions. This number in turn is crucial for the definition of policies, planning of services in areas such as education, health, security or transport and, consequently, the allocation of funds.

Impact.

More than 20 media impacts on Radio, TV, press and online; more than 4,500 views on the four videos created for the campaign and impacts on networks; more than 300 parents and other guardians of children with T21 have responded to the Censos 21.

“We wanted to show the opposite of what society generally thinks, and that people with Down's Syndrome have a totally independent and active life. They study, they have jobs, driver's licenses´, they travel..The families that participate in this project and in these videos have a very important role, and they share with us their story, challenges, frustrations and above all, their achievements.”
